Multinational discount department store chain TJX Companies Inc (NYSE:TJX) added 4.3% in the pre-market session as its quarterly earnings and sales beat second-quarter expectations. The Framingham, Massachusetts-based company's net income rose to $739.6 million, or $1.17 per share, in its second quarter, up from $553 million, or US$0.85 per share, last year. TJX also reported a 6 percent rise in same-store sales, whizzing past the 2.2 percent increase Wall Street analysts had expected. Its revenue, meanwhile, swung to $9.33bn in the quarter. Wall Street analysts had penciled in earnings of US$1.05 per share on revenue of US$8.99bn before the opening bell.
Meanwhile, Toll Brothers Inc (NYSE:TOL) saw shares surge 9.3% to US$37.95 before the bell after the luxury house builder posted results, which matched mean estimates from analysts. Net profit came in at US$1.26 a share, up from US$0.87 in the year-ago period, while revenue gained 27% to US$1.91bn. Elsewhere, grocer Kohl's Corp (NYSE:KSS) shares shed 2.3% to US$77.03 in pre-market deals as it posted an earnings and sales beat. Second-quarter net income came in at US$292mln or US$1.76 per share, up from US$208 million, or US$1.24 per share, while revenue totaled US$4.57bn, up from US$4.40bn last year.

Also today, before the New York bell, J M Smucker Co (NYSE:SJM) shares shed 3% in the pre-market to US$112.26 despite beating net income estimates. Net income at the Dunkin' Donuts owner was US$1.17 per share in the fiscal first quarter to July 31, up from US$1.12 a share a year earlier. Adjusted per-share earnings came were US$1.78, ahead of the consensus of US$1.76, but sales were just below consensus.
