Small-Cap Snapshot: Hotspot provider Boingo Wireless swings to a profit in its second quarter

The Wi-Fi provider reported earnings of US$0.05 per share versus estimates of a net loss of US$0.14 per share

Boingo Wireless Inc (NASDAQ:WIFI) was a top small-cap gainer after swinging to a profit in its second-quarter results. The wireless provider reported earnings of US$0.05 per share, well above analyst estimates of a net loss of US$0.14 per share. Revenue came in at US$59.6mln, topping forecasts for US$56.9mln. The Los Angeles-based company provides Wi-Fi hotspots in airports and other public spaces. It recently acquired fellow Wi-Fi provider Elauwit Networks LLC in a US$28mln cash deal.

Shares of Boingo jumped nearly 30% to US$29.99 in Thursday morning trading.

Electro Scientific Industries Inc (NASDAQ:ESIO) shares were electrified following a better-than-expected fiscal-first quarter. The semiconductor company reported earnings of US$0.96 well above consensus estimates of US$0.84. The Portland-based tech company specializes in precision laser processes.

Shares of ESI were up more than 20% to US$21.49.

Cross Country Healthcare Inc (NASDAQ:CCRN) shares fell after a double miss on earnings and revenue in its second-quarter results. The staffing provider reported earnings of US$0.04 per share on revenue of US$204.6mln, falling below analyst estimates of US$0.06 per share on revenue of US$208.9mln. The Florida-based company also elected Darrell Freeman, a long-time tech executive, as its new independent director.

Shares of the company fell more than 25% to US$8.68.

ION Geophysical Corporation (NYSE:IO) shares took a hit after lower-than-expected second-quarter earnings. The energy services company reported a net loss of US$1.68 per share, well below consensus estimates of a net loss of US$0.26 per share. The Houston-based company provides seismic data to oil and gas companies.

Shares were down more than 20% to US$19.95.

The Russell 2000 small-cap index was up slightly in Thursday morning trading.
