Amazon's Prime Day marked by site outages, dogs

The shopping event—typically bigger for Amazon than Black Friday— had global outages but the stock set a new trading record, closing up 0.5% at US$1,822.49.

Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) had a trying day on Monday as its website and mobile applications were hit with outages during the retail giant's annual Prime Day event.

The most significant outages were reported on in the U.S., with issues also being reported globally, including Canada and the UK.

On Monday, the stock set a new intraday trading record and closed up 0.5% at US$1,822.49. Shares fells 1% in after-hours trading.

Gone to the dogs

In some cases, users were referred to an error page featuring the "dogs of Amazon" and were unable to enter the site, while others could not enter specific product pages.

About two hours after the outage began, Amazon acknowledged the ongoing problems in short statement on its Twitter feed.

"Some customers are having difficulty shopping, and we're working to resolve this issue quickly."

It added that US customers ordered more items in the first hour of Prime Day than last year, despite the outages.

According to DownDetector.com, most of the outages were the US. However, it has also reported issues in Europe, Africa, South America, Russia, Asia and Australasia.

An Amazon representative said that the company is working to resolve the issue quickly and that only some shoppers are experiencing difficulty. Amazon didn’t disclose the cause of the outage.

The shopping event—typically bigger for Amazon than Black Friday— showed helps generate a revenue bump during the summer.

The sale began at 3 p.m. EST on Monday and is scheduled to end at the end of the day Tuesday.
