Amazon.com recovers from server crash on Prime Day

The homepage is generally available, but errors are coming up at checkout

Amazon.com Inc’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) website suffered an outage on Prime Day, at a rather unfortunate time as it kicked off its blockbuster sales event.

According to DownDetector.com, outage reports spiked around noon Pacific Daylight Time, just as Amazon Prime Day officially kicked off and appear to be limited to Amazon in the US. An hour into the sale, there appeared to be a handful of errors still plaguing the site.

“The homepage is generally available, but errors are coming up at checkout, items in shopping carts are disappearing, mobile alerts are delayed, products searches are sometimes offering no results, and some shoppers are caught in a ‘Shop All Deals’ loop,” reported CNET magazine.

Last year, Amazon’s Prime Day generated an estimated $1 billion in sales from the 30-hour event, which roughly equates to around $34 million every hour.

Amazon has not commented on the outage so far.

Amazon stock closed 1.5% lower to 1,795 Monday.
