Canada's main stock index made a fairly strong start to Wednesday, with the TSX up over 40 points at 16,303.
The venture exchange lost ground though, and is down 1.53 at 739.04.
In the US, Wall Street is closed for the July 4 holiday.
Yesterday, amid light volumes, The Dow Jones industrial Average closed 132 points lower at 24,174, while the S&P500 shed around 13 at 2,713.
The tech heavy Nasdaq index finished down around 65 points at 7,502.
The Canadian dollar also nudged up against the US dollar.
Valeant Pharmaceuticals Inc (TSE:VRX) added 1.89% to C$30.68 on no tangible news, while tech giant BlackBerry Ltd (TSE:BB) added 0.77% to C$13.04.
Utilities also charged into positive country, with Fortis Inc (TSE:FTS) nudging up 0.31% to C$42.26.
