Amazon continues its expansion, announces plans to open distribution center in Charlotte

The North Carolina city was snubbed as the location for Amazon's second headquarters

Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) plans to open a distribution center in Charlotte, North Carolina, investing around US$200mln in the project.

Charlotte officials approved Project Quattro in a unanimous vote and provided Amazon with a US$13.4mln incentive, as per a local report.

The new facility will sit on 108 acres near Charlotte Douglas International Airport and employ around 1,500 workers by 2019.

While the city was snubbed by the retail giant for its second headquarters, Councilman James Mitchell said the distribution center eases the hurt somewhat.

Salaries are expected to range from US$25,000 to US$45,000, according to Mitchell.

The e-commerce giant has been expanding across the US, announcing fulfillment centers opening in Michigan and Alabama.

Shares of the Seattle-based company were up slightly to US$1,672 in Tuesday pre-market trading.
