Intel CEO steps down amid investigation into past relationship with an employee

The tech company also upped its guidance for the second quarter

Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC) CEO Brian Krzanich has stepped down following an investigation into a “past consensual relationship with an employee,” according to the company.

Chief Financial Officer Robert Swan will fill in as interim CEO effective immediately.

The tech company will investigate via internal and external counsel whether Krzanich has violated its non-fraternization policy.

“The Board believes strongly in Intel’s strategy and we are confident in Bob Swan’s ability to lead the company as we conduct a robust search for our next CEO,” said Intel Chairman Andy Bryant in a release.

Outlook updated

Intel also announced that it expects to exceed its prior guidance for the second quarter.

The chipmaker is forecasting earnings of US$0.99 on revenue around US$16.9bn, compared with previous guidance of US$0.85 EPS on revenue of US$16.3bn.

Results for the second quarter will be announced July 26.

Shares of the California-based company fell more than 1% to US$52.78 in Thursday morning trading.
