PRE-MARKET MOVERS: Dollar General, Dollar Tree shares buffeted while AK Steel makes gains

AK Steel Holding Corp and shares in Crispr Therapeutics AG were also in play before the bell

US variety store chain Dollar General Corp (NYSE:DG) saw shares plunge almost 7% to US$90 in pre-market deals as its first-quarter profit and sales disappointed the market.

Net income at the discount store for the three months to May 4 increased to US$364.9mln, or US$1.36 a share, compared to US$279.5mln, or $1.02 a share, in the same period a year ago.

That was on revenue that increased 9% to US$6.11bn.

Consensus was for earnings per share (EPS) of US$1.40 and revenues of US$6.18bn.

Meanwhile, sticking to the dollar theme and discount retail sector, Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) shares shed over 7% to US$89.50 before the New York bell.

The company revealed adjusted earnings for the first quarter that missed estimates.

Excluding items, the firm reported adjusted earnings of US$284.1mln, or US$1.19 per share, against analysts' expectations of US$1.23 per share.

In other news, AK Steel Holding Corp (NYSE:AKS) saw share add over 5% to US$4.83.

It comes after the group introduced its new TRAN-COR X high permeability grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES) product family for use in high and ultra-high voltage power transformers.

Yesterday, Goldman Sachs also issued a note on the stock saying profitability at parts of the business remained limited, despite support from President Donald Trump's aggressive tariffs on foreign steel.

The investment bank also downgraded shares to sell from neutral.

Elsewhere, Crispr Therapeutics AG (NASDAQ:CRSP) shares slumped around 14% to US$63.25 in pre-market deals after it announced late on Wednesday that the U.S. FDA had put a hold on a new-drug application for a drug to treat sickle-cell disease.
