ITM Power PLC (LON:ITM) has played a key role in the first refuelling of a hydrogen van in the Orkney Islands as part of the Building Innovative Green Hydrogen Systems in an Isolated Territory (BIG HIT) demonstration project.
Five zero-emission Renault Kangoo vans were refuelled at ITM’s refuelling station in Hatston, the company said in a statement.

“The Orkney Islands are the ideal test bed for the creation of a fully-fledged hydrogen territory with hydrogen produced and used sustainably,” said ITM chief executive Graham Cooley.
“We are pleased to have helped develop the project and that ITM Power's equipment is part of this important European initiative.”
Key role for ITM in the BIG HIT
BIG HIT is a European pilot project, which is using the Orkney Islands as a base to demonstrate real end-use applications for hydrogen.

ITM has a pretty big role in the project. The AIM-listed energy storage and clean fuel company is providing the electrolysis which separates the hydrogen and oxygen in water.
As mentioned above, it is also providing the hydrogen refuelling station and is responsible for conducting much of the safety analysis.
ITM shares rose 4.7% to 33.5p in early afternoon trading.
