Amazon unveils Alexa-enabled smart homes in marketing plug

Customers can walk in and ask Alexa to control the television, lights, thermostats and shades at select Lennar model homes

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has its share of marketing tricks and in its latest one, it is launching Alexa-enabled televisions and lights in select Lennar model homes across the U.S.

In these entirely Alexa-enabled smart homes, customers can walk in and ask Alexa to control the television, lights, thermostat and shades. They can also reorder detergent or coffee with a quick click on an Amazon dash button or watch Amazon Prime content via a Fire TV.

These so-called Amazon experience centers are already open in Lennar model homes in Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, San Francisco and Seattle.

Amazon has been on a roll lately after smashing expectations just a few weeks ago with its first-quarter revenue and profit.

Net sales soared by 43% to US$51.0bn in the opening three months of the year, topping Wall Street estimates of US$49.9bn.

Part of the reason for the strong performance is the number of Prime subscribers, which Amazon revealed earlier had breached the 100mln mark.

In early afternoon trade, Amazon shares were flat at US$1,602.14.
