Midday Movers: McDonald’s, Financial Engines and more

Small cap indices the Russell 200 and the S&P 600 are both down slightly this afternoon

The U.S. benchmarks are all sliding today.

The Dow is down nearly 70 points, but saw a boost earlier in the day after McDonald’s Corporations’s (NYSE:MCD) strong earnings.

The fast food giant was one of the top gainers of the day after its first-quarter earnings beat Wall Street expectations on earnings per share and same store sales. Shares were nearly 5% to US$165.28.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq are both down less than a percent.

Arconic (NYSE:ARNC) was a top decliner of the day after the aluminum products maker lowered its profit outlook for the year due to rising aluminum prices. Shares of the New York-based company plummeted nearly 20% to US$18.11 in Monday trading.

In small cap news, the Russell 2000 and the S&P 600 are both down slightly. The Morningstar Small Cap Index is up less than a percent.

Financial Engines Inc (NASDAQ: FNGN) was a top small cap gainer with shares rising more than 30% to US$44.72. The investment advisory firm will be acquired by private equity firm Hellman and Freidman in a $3 billion deal.

Westmoreland Coal (NASDAQ:WLB) was a top small cap decliner with shares falling about 25% to US$0.15. The Colorado-based coal company has more than $1 billion in debt and was considering filing for bankruptcy protection earlier this month.
