Southwest Airlines emergency landing marks the first US passenger fatality since 2009

Wells Fargo exec was killed by shrapnel due to an engine that exploded in mid-air

A Southwest Airlines Co (NYSE:LUV) flight made an emergency landing in Philadelphia on Tuesday after an mid-air engine failure, leaving one passenger dead and seven others injured, according to authorities.

The incident marks the first passenger fatality in the US since 2009, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. Flight 1380 was en route to Dallas from New York.

Jennifer Riordan, an executive with Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC), was killed when shrapnel from an exploding engine shattered the window where she was sitting, USA Today reported.

"On behalf of the Southwest family, I want to extend my deepest sympathies for the family and the loved ones of our deceased customer. They are our immediate and primary concern and we will do all that we can to support them during this difficult time," said CEO Gary Kelly in a YouTube video.

Shares of Southwest Airlines were trading 2% higher at US$54.33 early Wednesday.
