Lloyds to close 49 branches, cut 305 jobs in UK

Lloyds said the branch and job cuts are part of its plans to focus on improving its digital offering

Lloyds Banking Group PLC (LON:LLOY) plans to close 49 branches across the UK, resulting in 305 job losses.

The bank said the cuts are part of its plans to respond to a growing shift towards online banking.

“We have confirmed the locations of some Lloyds Bank and Halifax branches which will close between July and October this year," said a Lloyds spokesperson.

"These branch closures are in response to changing behaviour and the reduced number of transactions being made in branches.”

Lloyds also announced that its mobile branch service will be expanded to support customers in more locations. It will introduce seven new Lloyds Bank mobile branches, bringing its total to 36 across 180 communities.

The bank has been upgrading its digital offering as it seeks to cut costs. In February, it earmarked a £3bn investment as part of a three-year digital strategy.
