FTSE 100 seen higher after Dow Jones, S&P 500 and NASDAQ rebound

The FTSE 100 is projected to advance 0.9% in early trade after shedding 0.6% on Friday to take its weekly loss to 1.1%.

Stock market index futures and commodities advanced early Monday after Ireland agreed to request a bailout package that will amount to €85 billion.

Friday’s top risers included chipmaker ARM Holdings (LON:ARM) and hedge fund manager Man Group (LON:EMG), which added nearly 4%.

Essar Energy (LON:ESSR) and International Power (LON:IPR) added 2.4% and 2% respectively.

Software developer Sage Group (LON:SGE) was at the bottom of the pile with a 3% decline.

Bank Standard Chartered (LON:STAN) and retailer Marks & Spencer (LON:MKS) lost about 2.5%.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) managed to post gains on Friday following a late surge, adding 0.2.

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HP) was in the lead, advancing 1.9%.

American Express (NYSE:AMX) and DuPont (NYSE:DD) tacked on 1.2%.

General Electric (NYSE:GE) and Home Depot (NYSE:HD) climbed 1.1%.

Boeing (NYSE:BA) was the heaviest faller in DJIA with a 1.58% loss.

Disney (NYSE:DIS) declined 1.5%.

The broader S&P 500 index gained 0.25%. The technology heavy NASDAQ composite tacked on 0.15%.

Asian stocks were mixed today. China’s Shanghai Composite Index and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.6%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 advanced 0.9% and South Korea’s KOSPI rose 0.2%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added 0.3%.

Commodities

Oil prices moved higher. US light, sweet crude for January delivery advanced to US$82.51/barrel, while January Brent Crude reached US$85/barrel.

Precious metals rose. Gold climbed to US$1,360/oz, while silver and platinum rose to US$27.61/oz and US$1,665/oz respectively.

Base metals followed with copper and nickel reaching US$3.84/lb and US$9.95/lb respectively, while zinc climbed to US$0.999/lb.

An update on the Chicago Fed business activity index will be released in the US today.
