Dunkin' Donuts unveils new 'donut fries' in Boston

Dusted with cinnamon and sugar, donut fries are not the only new item on the menu at a clutch of stores in Boston

Forget about a chocolate glazed or a Boston Crème. Dunkin’ Donuts (NASDAQ:DNKN), the U.S. coffee chain, is introducing a new sort of donut.

Dubbed “donut fries,” these pastries are long and thin and bear a resemblance to Spanish churros.

Dusted with cinnamon and sugar, donut fries are not the only new item on the menu at a clutch of stores in Boston and elsewhere in Massachusetts. Other recently-unveiled items on Dunkin’s “Gotta Have $2 Snacks” menu range from chicken fingers breaded with waffle batter, ham and cheese rollups, pretzels shaped in balls and chocolate dipping spreads designed for Munchkin donuts, according to local news reports.

The company is describing the introduction of the new items as a test and it is looking for feedback from Bostonians about their worth before a possible rollout across the U.S.

The chain has been looking for ways to bring in new customers for some time by making subtle shifts to its menu. Last year, for example, it did away with the Coffee Coolatta and replaced it with its frozen coffee, which has more of a coffee taste.

In early trade, shares in Duncan Brands Group Inc, were down slightly by 0.75% to US$59.71.
