Amazon Web Services, Amazon.com Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AMZN) cloud platform, announced Wednesday that the number of businesses using the service has more than tripled in the past year.
The list of high-profile companies reflects an array of global businesses and sectors, including Dow Jones, Popsugar, Tinder and Cathay Pacific.

AWS credits its SageMaker product, which simplifies machine learning, otherwise known as Artificial Intelligence, for the bump in subscriptions.
General Electric Co.'s (NYSE:GE) GE Healthcare unit utilizes the service, using its artificial intelligence tools to enhance patient care, according to Amazon.
“The scalability of AmazonSageMaker, and its ability to integrate with native AWS services, adds enormous value for us. We are excited about how our continued collaboration between the GE Health Cloud and Amazon SageMaker will drive better outcomes for our healthcare provider partners and deliver improved patient care,” said Sharath Pasupunuti, GE Healthcare’s Artificial Intelligence Engineering Leader.
Shutterfly Inc. (NASDAQ:SFLY), an online retailer of personalized products, announced on Wednesday that it would also be moving to AWS.
“We are especially excited about using AWS’s machine learning services. For example, we are currently experimenting with Amazon Rekognition for image classifications and metadata enrichment and Amazon Cognito for identity services. The cost savings we expect to see by running on AWS will enable us to put more resources towards innovation and developing our next-generation platform,” said Satish Menon, Shutterfly’s Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer.
Intuit Inc. (NASDAQ:INTU), the fintech company behind Quickbooks Mint, and TurboTax, is also a user of AWS.
“By including AWS machine learning and artificial intelligence workloads in our overall artificial intelligence and machine learning strategy, we can accelerate the end-user benefits within our flagship product,” said H. Tayloe Stansbury, Intuit’s chief technology officer.

News outlets like Dow Jones, one of the leading providers of business and finance news, and POLITICO, a political news outlet, are on board as well.
“As Dow Jones continues to focus on integrating machine learning into our products and services, AWS has been a great resource,” said Ramin Beheshti, group chief product and technology officer.
Tinder, a popular dating app owned by Match Group Inc. (NASDAQ:MTCH), uses the service to assist in matchmaking. “Behind every Tinder swipe is a system that manages millions of requests a minute, billions of swipes a day, across more than 190 countries,” said Elie Seidman, CEO of Tinder.
Several big-name companies outside of the U.S. have also taken advantage of AWS, including Cathay Pacific Ltd., the Hong Kong-based international airline, and Cookpad Inc., Japan’s largest recipe-sharing service.
