US benchmarks mainly in red at close

A look at the US and Canada markets on the day - March 12

US benchmarks mixed

TSX higher

Anthera Pharma tumbles

US stock were mainly red at the close but the tech heavy Nasdaq closed at a new high.

It finished up over 27 points at 7,588.

Meanwhile, the S&P 500 shed 3.55 at 2,783.

The Dow Jones lost over 157 points at 25,178.

US crude shed 1.10% to US$ 61.36 a barrel.

In Toronto, the TSX is down around 30 points at 15,608.

MID-SESSION

Wall Street shares were lower at mid-session, with the Dow Jones Industrial Index down 109 points at 25,226.

Traders were giving equities a miss on the day and US crude fell 1.37% at US$61.21 a barrel.

The S&P 500 was near flat at 2,785, while the Nasdaq was up over 33 points at 7,593.

in Toronto were mixed, as declines in energy shares and gold producers weighed.

the S&P/TSX Composite Index, having been down earlier, is up over 20 at 15,598 at the time of writing.

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd (TSE:CNQ) lost 0.39% to C$38.75. Iamgold Corp (TSE:IAG) lost 2.45% to C$6.37.

On Wall Street, BlueLinx Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:BXC) added over 70% to US$ 26.96 after the company reported a US$413 million merger with Cedar Creek.

United Community Bancorp Inc (NASDAQ:UCBA) added over 23% to US$243.90 as Civista Bancshares Inc (NASDAQ:CIVB, down 5.92%) announced plans to acquire the for an implied deal value of US$26.22 per share.

On the losing front, Anthera Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:ANTH) lost four-fifths of its value after the company said it is suspending further development of its lead product Sollpura.

The candidate failed to achieve the desired results in a Phase 3 clinical study intended to evaluate its performance against approved pancreatic enzyme replacement therapies for patients with cystic fibrosis.

Shares tanked over 81% to US$0.50 each.

After surging Friday, US stocks opened their account in similar fashion on Monday.

The Dow Jones gained over 52 points at 25,391.

The S&P 500 added almost seven points at 2,793.

The Nasdaq added 35 points at 7,596.

US crude shed 0.87% US$61.52 a barrel.

In Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite Index - the largest there retained gains of 39.11 points to close Friday and the week at 15,577.81

Stock futures point to a flat opening for Canada's main index today.

On S&P 500, the biggest gainer was Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU), which added 6.56% to US$58.16 a share after its price target was hiked by Nomura/ Instinet and its 'buy' stance was repeated.
