Harley-Davidson shows electric ambitions with latest acquisition

The Milwaukee-based has been developing its electric technology for a little while now and it will use the expertise of Alta Motors ahead of the launch of its first electric bike next year

It’s not just car makers that are making moves towards electric, Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) is getting in on the action as well.

The Milwaukee-based motorcycle giant has acquired part of Alta Motors – a company which has been making electric dirt bikes for almost a decade.

Harley will work with Alta on its own upcoming electric motorcycle, which is expected to be available for purchase in 2019.

“Earlier this year, as part of our 10-year strategy, we reiterated our commitment to build the next generation of Harley-Davidson riders, in part, by aggressively investing in electric vehicle (EV) technology," said Harley’s president and chief executive Matt Levatich.

“Alta has demonstrated innovation and expertise in EV and their objectives align closely with ours. We each have strengths and capabilities that will be mutually beneficial as we work together to develop cutting-edge electric motorcycles.”

Shares in the motorbike manufacturer were broadly flat at US$45.30 in early deals on Wednesday.
