S&P 500 and Nasdaq reach new highs
Dow Jones lower
Netflix surges 10%
Wall Street stocks closed mixed but the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq reached fresh highs.
Tech stocks were behind the stock market rise.
The Dow Jones closed 3.79 points lower at 26,210.
The S&P 500 ended around six points higher at 2,839.
The Nasdaq closed at 7,460 - up over 52 points.
In Toronto , the TSX is up over 17 points at 16,365.
Retail giant Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) added 2.65% to US$ 1,362.54. Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) shares added 9.98% to US$250.29 after quarterly results cheered.
Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) added 1.03% to 1,176.17.
MID-SESSION
Wall Street shares were still volatile and mixed at mid-session.
The Dow Jones industrial Average is down 6.6 pts at 26,207, while the broader based S&P 500 is up 4.57 at 2,837.
The tech heavy Nasdaq index added over 40 points at 7,448.
In Toronto, the TSX is down 1.47 at 16,346.
In New York, among the notable movers was medtech group ResMed Inc (NYSE:RMD), which added over 15% to US$101.01 following a big second quarter earnings beat. Investment banker Needham upgraded the stock to 'hold' from 'underperform'.
Chinanet Online Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CNET) gained over 13% to US$4.23 as the firm reported a blockchain joint venture.

US stocks started mixed with the Dow Jones lower.
The S&P 500 briefly hit an intraday record near the open and 2,836 before falling back to 2,835, whikle the Nasdaq hit a new intraday high of 7,431, before slipping to 7,429.

The Dow Jones is down over 25 points at 26,186.
US crude is up 0.79% to US$64.07.
In stocks, Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) surged 10% on the back of its fourth quarter earnings last night.
