No details of the terms of the sale were disclosed. According to Factset, Buddybuild has raised nearly US$9mln in investments, with the most recent fundraising in May 2016.

Apple has a habit of snapping up tech firms. At the end of November, technology news website techcrunch reported that the US tech giant had acquired Canadian start-up Vrvana, the maker of an augmented reality headset called Totem, for about US$30mln.

In early December, the same website reported that Apple was on the verge of buying Shazam, the makers of an app that killed the music pub quiz.

Techcrunch’s sources said the acquisition price was a nine-figure sum, with one source putting it at around £300mln (US$400mln).
