US stocks closed higher on the first trading day of the new year.
After the bell, Tetraphase Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:TTPH) was making waves, up over 17% to US$7.60 each
The group said it had completed phase 3 clinical trials and now submitted an application to the key Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in a bid for approval of a new drug used to treat intra-abdominal infections.

It also told investors it had promoted vice president of clinical development Dr Larry Tsai to the role of chief medical officer.
Elsewhere, shares in Moneygram International Inc (NASDAQ:MGI), the Dallas headquartered transfer group, shed over 5% after the bell to US$12.63.
It came after he termination of an amended merger agreement with Chinese fintech company Ant Financial, after the pair failed to win approval from the committee on foreign investment in the USA
Another mover in extended hours was Planet Fitness Inc (NYSE:PLNT), which shed 4.855 in the regular session but then gained 0.12% after the bell after it announced it acquired a franchise group with six locations in Suffolk County, New York.
Meanwhile, Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXN) gained 0.77% to US$125 after it told investors it would collaborate with activist investor Elliott to appoint a new board member, which has been an ongoing search since November.
