US benchmarks sailing higher into close

US shares started on the front foot on Tuesday and were ending the session in similar fashion

The Dow Jones is up over 250 points going into the close as European shares also sailed higher on the day.

The Dow Jones is up 252 at 23,832 at the time of writing g in the last few minutes of trade.

The S&P 500 is up over 25 at 2,626 and the tech heavy Nasdaq is over 30 points to the good at 6,908.

In Toronto, the TSX is heading the other way but has recouped earlier losses - down just 2.91 points at 16,039.

US crude - west Texas Intermediate - lost 0.34% on the day at US$57.91 a barrel.

MID-SESSION

Wall Street shares surged at mid-session to reach new records as the Wall Street rally appeared to be back on.

Earlier FTSE 100 in London closed 1.04% higher and the pound firmed against the dollar after a report in the Daily Telegraph newpaper said that the U.K. and EU had reached an agreement on the so-called Brexit divorce bill.

The final figure to be is said to be between €45 and €55 billion.

The Dow Jones is up over 180 points at 23,761, the S&P 500 is up 17.80 at 2,619, while the Nasdaq is 21,32 ahead at 6,899.

In Toronto, the TSX is up over 26 points at 16,068.

In stocks, notable movers were PhaseRx Inc (NASDAQ:PZRX), which surged over 78'% to US$1.18 after the firm revealed it had received a position opinion for orphan drug designation for PRX-ASL from the EMA.

Meanwhile, Apollo Endosurgery Inc (NASDAQ:APEN) added 47.73% to US$5.98 after the firm revealed it had received FDA clearance for OverStitch Sx.

On the downside, Auris Medical Holding AG (NASDAQ:EARS) saw shares lose over 48% to US$0.43 after it told investors that the HEALOS Phase 3 trial did not meet its primary efficacy endpoint.

OPEN

US shares started on the front foot on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones powering up over 68 points at 23,649.

The broader based S&P 500 is up 5.12 at 2,606 and the Nasdaq is up 6.30 points at 6,884.

In Toronto, the TSX is up over 36 points to stand at 16,078.

In companies, a notable riser is Emerson Electric Company (NYSE:EMR), which added 2.54% to US$63.46.

It came as it took its latest offer to buy peer Rockwell Automation Inc off the table.

Emerson chief executive David Farr said in a statement: "We are disappointed that the Rockwell board refused even to discuss the potential combination of our two great companies."
