Amazon.com Inc (LON:AMZN), BT Group plc (LON:BT.A) and Argos are among the major brands in the UK taking part in Cyber Monday with billions expected to be shelled out online and in store.
But a squeeze on consumer spending from higher inflation and the fact that many shops have held bargains since last week may water down sales compared to last year.
Store visits on Black Friday fell 3.6%, according to figures from data analysts Springboard, more than the expected decline of 0.6%. In high street stores, the footfall was down 4.2%.
Springboard blamed the consumer squeeze and the extension of the sales event. It also said many consumers believed that discounts will continue or increase past Black Friday.
Springboard expects a further 4% decline in footfall on Cyber Monday.
Separate figures from VoucherCodes and the Centre for Retail Research have forecast that £7.8bn would be spent over the four-day period, up 7% on last year, with 21.5mln heading online for Cyber Monday discounts.
