US stocks close lower; crude prices rise

US benchmarks closed in the red on Friday but crude prices rose

Wall Street closes lower

Tesla up; crude price rises

Footlocker Inc surges

Wall Street shares closed lower on Friday as traders fretted over US tax plans among other issues but the crude prices came back from a two week low.

US crude is up 2.65% to US$56.50 a barrel but the commodity still suffered a weekly decline - the first for six weeks.

The Dow Jones lost over 99 points to 23,358, while the Nasdaq lost 10.5 at 6,782.

The broader based S&P500 shed 6.79 at 2,578.

In stocks, Footlocker Inc (NYSE:FL) was the big cap riser of the day, with shares adding over 28% to US$40.84 each as the market cheered its third quarter results.

MID-SESSION

US stocks were mixed at mid-session, with the Dow Jones down over 88 at 23,370.

The broader-based S&P 500 shed 3.09 at 2,582.

Meanwhile, the tech heavy Nasdaq was up 1.40 at 6,794.

US crude added 2.36% to US$56.44 a barrel.

Notable movers were Diana Containerships Inc (NASDAQ:DCIX), which added over 43% to US$9.48 after it reported a third quarter loss of $128.67 per share on sales of $6.73 million.

Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) shares gained 0.90% to US$315.31 after it launched, as expected, the new electric truck and to everyone's surprise the revamped Roadster 2.0 car.

Now it has emerged that retail giant Wal-Mart (NYSE: has preordered 15 of the new tractor trailers.

US stocks started in the red on Friday, with the Dow Jones down around 54 points to 23,403.

The S&P 500 shed over three points to 2,582.

The tech heavy Nasdaq lost over four points to 6,788.

In the oil market, US crude (West Texas Intermediate) shed 1.41% to stand at US$55.99 a barrel.

It came as new figures showed that the construction of new homes climbed 13.7% in October, the biggest jump in a year as builders broke ground on more apartments and single-family houses.

In stocks, Footlocker Inc (NYSE:FL) was a runaway winner, adding 23% to US$39.14.

Third quarter net income for the third quarter came in at US$102 million, or US$0.81 per share, compared with net income of US$157 million, or $1.17 per share in the same period of 2016.
