Vodafone sells mobile phone towers in India to American Tower

American Tower will buy ATC Telecom Infrastructure, a joint venture between Vodafone’s India business and Idea Cellular

Vodafone Group PLC (LON:VOD) has agreed to sell its mobile phone towers in India to American Tower Corp. for 78.5bn rupees.

American Tower will buy ATC Telecom Infrastructure, a joint venture between Vodafone’s India business and Idea Cellular that includes a network of 20,000 towers across the country.

The deal comes after Vodafone announced in March that it was merging its loss-making Indian mobile phone business with Idea after failing to list the unit.

Vodafone has been tackling fierce competition in the Indian mobile market and in November last year it revealed a €6.4bn writedown to its division in the nation.

The sale of ATC Telecom is expected to be completed in the first half of 2018, subject to regulatory approval.
