US benchmarks higher into close as sentiment remains upbeat

Wall Street shares are looking to consolidate gains going into the close as sentiment continues to be upbeat.

The Dow Jones is up 8.33 at 22,649; the S&P 500 is ahead by 2.32 at 2,536.

The tech heavy Nasdaq index is 2.77 points higher at 6,534.

West Texas Intermediate is down 1.13% to US$49.85 a barrel.

In Toronto, however, the TSX is down 2.59 at 17,725.

MID-SESSION

The Dow Jones is up over 21 at mid-session, at 22,663.

The S&P500 is up 1.29 at 2,535 and the Nasdaq shed over nine points at 6,522.

US crude is off 0.61% to US$50.10 a barrel.

Real Goods Solar Inc (NASDAQ:RGSE) added nearly 290% after the announcement of exclusive license agreement with Dow to commercialize POWERHOUSE solar shingles system.

Elsewhere, Motif Bio (NASDAQ:MTFB) added over 17% to US$11.84 after the group said its drug Iclaprim achieved primary endpoint in a Phase 3 study.

Among the losers, Sequans Communications (NYSE: SQNS) fell almost 34% to US$1.93 after the company lowered its guidance for the third quarter.

Celsion Corporation (NASDAQ:CLSN) added over 22% to US$4.70 after soaring over 301% on Tuesday.

OPEN

US stocks started mixed on Wednesday as traders catch their breath afer the recent record highs.

The Dow Jones Industrial Index is up almost four points at 22,645 at the time of writing but the tech heavy Nasdaq and S&P 500 indices are in the red.

The Nasdaq is down over 13 at 6,518, while the S&P 500 is off over two points.

US crude, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), is down 0.28% to stand at US$50.28 a barrel.

In stocks, pharma giant Mylan NV (NASDAQ:MYL) was a notable riser, surging over 17% to US$38.27 each as the FDA approved its generic abbreviated drug versions of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd's Copaxone - a drug for people with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis.

On the downside, Acuity Brands (NYSE:AYI) was down 3.41% to US$163.88 despite it beating Wall Street estimates with its fourth quarter numbers.
