Legend Mining (ASX:LEG) plans to commence its 3,000-metre aircore drilling program targeting electromagnetic conductors next month at its Rockford Project in the Fraser Range of Western Australia.
The aircore drilling program is planned for Areas D, J, Q and U, which contain electromagnetic (EM) conductors previously identified from regional innovative EM surveys.
Results from 22 petrology samples selected from diamond holes at Area N have also been received.
The petrology samples provided valuable information on rock type, sulphide character and the relationship between the mafic and ultramafic intrusives and metasediments.

“Our next field program will consist of aircore drilling over areas already identified as prospective by moving loop EM surveys and is designed to provide lithogeochemical information to assist in prioritising future diamond drilling programs.
“It was also pleasing to get petrological confirmation that diamond hole 3 at Area N intersected mafic/ultramafic intrusions in metasediments, which is a setting consistent with NovaBollinger style mineralisation.
‘This knowledge furthers our understanding of the geology of the Rockford project and will assist in planning future field activities.”
Petrology results
The petrology confirmed the presence of multiple intrusions, which show hallmarks of the potential formation of massive nickel-copper sulphide deposits, such as Nova-Bollinger.
However, the intrusions at Area N are considered low-nickel intrusions with any significant mineralisation occurring lower in the system.
The petrological information represents an important dataset, and when integrated with the
lithogeochemistry, aeromagnetic and gravity data greatly assists the interpretation and geological understanding of Area N and the wider Rockford Project.
Future exploration will be focussed on trying to identify the more nickel-rich parts of these mafic and ultramafic intrusions.
Rockford project
The Rockford project is located in the globally renowned Fraser Range district of Western Australia and covers an area of 2,792 square kilometres.
The majority of the project comprising seven contiguous granted exploration licences is the subject of a joint venture between Legend (70%, operator) and Creasy Group (30%).
Creasy Group is affiliated with legendary prospector Mark Creasy, who owned an interest in arguably one of Australia’s best discoveries in recent times – the Nova Bollinger nickel-copper project in the Fraser Range.
The project covers a strike length of 100 kilometres over a regional gravity high ridge associated with dense mafic/ultramafic intrusive rocks of the Fraser Zone.
The Nova-Bollinger deposit, which lies within the Fraser Zone, is situated on a similar tenor gravity ridge to that of the Rockford project.
