Shares in Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) nudged higher in pre-market trade after the computer graphics card maker confirmed it is to supply several of China’s largest cloud-computing providers with its cutting edge artificial intelligence technology.
Speaking on Monday night, chief executive and founder Jensen Huang revealed that its Volta-based platform has already been adopted by some big Chinese players, such as Alibaba Group, Baidu Inc and Tencent Holdings.
The three computing giants have agreed to update their data centres with the new technology, which revolves around the V100 data centre GPU.
The graphics processing unit has 21bn transistors which means it is able to offer five times the performance over the chips the companies currently use.
In addition to the cloud giants, Nvidia also told investors that some of China’s largest server builders are adopting its technology, including Lenovo and Huawei.
“AI is the most important technology development of our time, with the greatest potential to help society," Huang said in a statement.
"As the world's leading cloud providers deploy the world's best AI platform, with Volta GPUs and Nvidia software, we'll see amazing breakthroughs in medicine, autonomous transportation, precision manufacturing and much more."
Shares were upp 3.2% in pre-market trade to US$176.40.
