Macy's Inc (NYSE:M) said that although it will hire 20% more workers during the holiday shopping season at its distribution and warehouses for its online operations, the total hiring will see a drop.
The department store operator said on Thursday that it is set to hire a total of 18,000 holiday workers to undertake fulfillment of online orders, including shipping and packaging. This is a 3,000 rise from the numbers hired last year.
However, the company noted that total hiring for the holiday season is set to drop to 80,000 from the 83,000 hired last year.
Macy’s has 70 fewer stores this year, compared to last year.
Meanwhile, the store’s rival, Target Corp (NYSE:TGT) said that it will taken on 43% more seasonal employees, or 100,000 for the holiday season.
