Inflation figures higher than expected
The Dow Jones closed at a new record high on Wall Street.
It closed up over 45 points at 22,203, but the broader based S&P 500 closed down 2.75 at 2,495.
The tech heavy Nasdaq finished down 31 at 6,429, while US crude stood at $49.70 at the time of writing - up 0.81%.
In Toronto, the TSX finished over 54 higher at 15,181.
Consumer prices in the US rose 0.4% in August, driven largely by increases in the cost of petrol and shelter, according to official stats.
Analysts had forecast the consumer price index to rise by 0.3% in August. It means another rate hike this year is now looking more likely.
MID-SESSION
The Dow Jones was still powering higher at mid-session, but the S&P 500 was lower.
The Dow is up over 48 at the time of writing, at 22,206.
The Nasdaq is ahead by over 20 points at 6,440. The S&P 500 is down 1.92 at 2,496.
In Toronto, the TSX is up over 29 points at 15,155.
Among the notable risers, Halozyme Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:HALO) rose over 19% to $15.69 as Bristol-Myers and the firm disclosed a collaboration and license agreement using Halozyme's ENHANZE technology.
The company also announced the licensing of its ENHANZE to Roche. Halozyme Therapeutics also raised its full year sales outlook.

OPEN
US benchmarks started mixed on Thursday after closing higher as crude continued to rise, but the Dow did earlier reach a fresh intra-day high.
It has now fallen back slightly to stand at 22,174 - up 16.91.
The S&P 500 is down 3.97 at 2,494 and the tech heavy Nasdaq is down 23 points at 6,436.
US crude is up 1.40% at the time of writing at US$49.99 a barrel, while in Toronto the TSX is up over 17 at 15,144.
It comes as new data showed that the US inflation figure is finally heading upward.
The 0.2% rise in the core measure ends a five-month streak of weaker-than-expected readings.
Experts say however it will take more readings to determine whether this uptick is really being sustained.
In stocks, the oil price rise is bolstering oil stocks as it did yesterday. Chesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK) is up 5.46% to US$4.16 each.
Credit score group Equifax (NYSE: EFX) continues to lag- down 7.69% to $ 91.38 a barrel.
