Balfour Beatty plc (LON:BBY) has sold its 95% stake in Blackpool Airport to Blackpool Council for £4.25mln after years of searching for a buyer.
"The sale of Blackpool Airport further simplifies the portfolio, in line with the group's strategy,” the infrastructure group said in a statement.
The group announced the closure of the loss-making airport in 2014 after failing to find a buyer, forcing airlines to move routes to nearby airports.
At the time analysts said the company needed to address the airport’s decline in profitability or it would struggle to offload the business.
Simon Blackburn, leader of Blackpool Council, said: "Today is a really important day for aviation on the Fylde coast and this sale heralds a positive new dawn for Blackpool Airport.
"This move will protect the airport as a company, including the 30 jobs that are currently employed there. It will also allow us to ensure that the airport itself can continue to operate as an important hub that can benefit the whole region."
Shares in Balfour edged down 0.27% to 263.0p in morning trading.
