Zumiez jumps as skate and snowboard apparel retailer posts above-forecast second-quarter results

The Nasdaq-listed company saw its net loss for the quarter to July 29 narrow to US$608,000, or 2 US cents a share, down from a loss of $838,000, or 3 US cents a share in the same period a year ago

Zumiez Inc. (NASDAQ:ZUMZ) saw its shares jump nearly 15% in pre-market trading after the specialty skate and snowboard apparel retailer reported better-than-expected second-quarter results after-hours on Thursday.

The Nasdaq-listed company saw its net loss for the quarter to July 29 narrow to US$608,000, or 2 US cents a share, down from a loss of $838,000, or 3 US cents a share in the same period a year ago, and better than consensus for a loss per share of 6 US cents.

The firm’s revenue rose to US$192.2mln, up from US$178.27mln a year earlier and above consensus of US$192.1mln, as same-store sales grew 4.7%, also beat expectations for a 4.5% increase.

Zumiez said it expects its third-quarter earnings per share to be in a range of 43 US cents to 48 US cents, revenue of US$236mln to US$241mln and same-store sales growth of 4% to 6%.

That compared with current consensus forecasts as for EPS of 43 US cents, revenue of US$227.9mln, and same-store sales growth of 1.6%.

In pre-market New York trading, Zumiez shares were up 14.5% to US$15.5 each.
