Rolls-Royce the toast of the Midlands

Rolls-Royce is to invest £150m in new civil aerospace facilities in the East Midlands, safeguarding 7,000 jobs said the aeroengine maker.

It is its biggest single investment in the UK for more than a decade and will see a new facility built at its historic site in Derby to test aero engines.

That will create up to 200 jobs while a deal with its unions will unions provide work for nearly a third of its 22,300-strong UK workforce for five years.

Primed for Amazon

July 11, a Tuesday, has been named the third annual Amazon Prime Day. Over 100,000 items are set to be discounted to customers who have signed up for the Prime Service.

Deals are released sporadically throughout the day are available for a set period or all have been sold.

Ocado tries driverless

Ocado has responded to the onslaught of Amazon by unveiling its fist driverless delivery vehicle. Yes, it does look remarkably like a milk float and will be used in places “where bigger vehicles are not allowed.”

A spokesman told the BBC it had no intention to move to trial a drone service along the lines of Amazon.

Sky/21st Century Fox

The UK government plans to refer 21st Century Fox Inc’s (NASDAQ:FOX) proposed £11.7bn takeover of Sky PLC (LON:SKY) to competition authorities amid concerns that the deal would give Rupert Murdoch too much control over the country’s media.

It’s a blow for Murdoch and Fox, who were hoping to get the acquisition over the line as soon as possible, as it now looks likely that they will have to wait for another six months or so while the CMA launches a more in-depth phase two review.
