Wal-Mart Stores Ince (NYSE:WMT) appears to have finally reacted to Amazon.com Inc’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) incursion into the grocery sector if a report in the New York Post stands up to scrutiny.
The Post says the world’s largest retailer is threatening to drop trucking companies that work with Amazon.
It quotes a transportation consultant, although Wal-Mart itself told the paper it is not dictating to trucking companies which other customers they may service.
The story has emerged in the wake of Amazon’s US$13.7bn tilt for Whole Food Market (NASDAQ:WFM), which has taken the online retailer into the offline world – sending panic through the sector.
In fact, there was a significant sell-off among the grocers when deal was first unveiled earlier this month with Target Corp (NYSE:TGT) seen most vulnerable to increased competition.
