The name change came after J Sainsbury plc (LON:SBRY) threatened legal action against Jel Singh Nagra for branding his store Singhsbury.

The supermarket accused Nagra, 42, of copyright infringement in 2012.

Nagra took down his signs but locals continued to refer to the store as Singhsbury.

He operated without a sign for nearly five years before deciding to rebrand the business Morrisinghs when he saw an opportunity to expand following the closure of the Post Office next door.

Nagra told Sky News: "We recently did a shop refit and I thought now is the time to do it. I had the name in my head for quite a while.

"There has been some negative feedback on social media, but it is a bit of fun and banter. We're British. This is us. We've always had this sense of humour.

"A lot of the customers are saying it's a funny name. It's a pun, really."

A Sainsbury's spokesperson told the broadcaster the company was “grateful to Mr Nagra for removing the sign”.
