Sunrise Resources unearths new pozzolan zone at CS in Nevada

The Northeast Zone has a mapped area approximately 650m long by 650m wide.

Sunrise Resources Plc (LON:SRES) has discovered a new area of pozzolan to the north-east of the Main Zone at its CS Project in Nevada.

An additional 17 Mining Claims have now been staked to include the new discovery area which is now referred to as the "Northeast Zone".

The Northeast Zone has a mapped area approximately 650m long by 650m wide. Four surface samples taken at different localities from within the Northeast Zone have been submitted for cement replacement strength testing.

Seven-day strengths are now available from three of these samples and all exceed the seven-day strength requirements of ASTM standard C618N1. The four samples also exhibit perlitic expansion.

A number of trenches will be excavated within the new zone.

Patrick Cheetham, executive chairman, said the discovery was the third zone of natural pozzolan close to the its areas of interest.

“We believe that this discovery increases the value of the project and adds to the future production opportunities which we are progressing towards development."

What is pozzolan?

Natural pozzolan is a “greener” alternative to the use of Portland cement in cement and concrete mixes.

Interest in pozzolan is growing, especially in the US where traditionally manufacturers have used fly ash from coal-fired power stations as a key ingredient in cement mixes.

But as coal-fired power stations in the US are closed – half have gone since 2010 – natural pozzolan producers are seeing sales soar.

Tests at CS have shown it is a potentially large deposit of perlite, an industrial mineral which expands on heating to a lightweight material with multiple industrial uses.

This material also has potential as a high quality natural pozzolan while there is also a separate, large area of non-perlitic pozzolan at CS.
