iPhone maker Foxconn to unveil US manufacturing plans in coming weeks

New manufacturing plants could potentially create tens of thousands of jobs for Americans.

Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone manufacturer Foxconn Technology Co Ltd (TPE:2354) could announce plans to open a manufacturing plant in the United States in the coming weeks, according to reports citing chairman Terry Gou.

Foxconn is looking at potential sites in several US states - such as Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin – for as many as six investment projects, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Gou previously, in January, said he hoped Foxconn could build a US$7bn plant, which could create 30,000 to 50,000 jobs.

The Asia-based contract technology manufacturer starting a new operation within the United States would be a significant political totem for President Donald Trump, who said he would ‘bring back’ manufacturing jobs when he promised to “make America great again”.

Foxconn Technology Group, previously known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, is the world’s largest electronics manufacturer, working on several major US technology brands such as Apple’s iPhones and iPads, Amazon’s Kindle, Sony’s Playstation and Microsoft’s Xbox.
