US stocks end mixed after choppy day

Oil traders were spooked last week by new data showed the increased output from US shale producers

US stocks ended a topsy turvey day mixed with the Nasdaq the only major benchmark to end higher.

It closed just 2.73 ahead at 6,236. The Dow Jones was down 12 at 21, 397.

The broader based S&P500 finished the day up 1.11 at 2,439.

In Toronto , the TSX had a positive day, finishing 71 ahead at 15,219.

US crude was up 0.45% higher at $42.73 a barrel at the time of writing.

Oracle Corp (NYSE:ORCL) was up 8.57% at $50.30 as the software titan's earnings cheered the market.

MID-SESSION

Wall Street shares were making good going into the close, with major benchmarks all higher.

The Dow Jones added 24 at 21,434. The S&P 500 was up 3.48 at 2,439.

The tech heavy Nasdaq index added 12.35 to stand at 6.246.

US crude added 0.52% to $42.73 a barrel.

In company news, shares in cancer therapy focused firm DelMar Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: DMPI) raced up over 19% to $2.21 as it received the green light to conduct a pivotal Phase 3 study.

DelMar's VAL-083 STAR-3 GBM trial is a randomized, controlled clinical trial in patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) whose disease has progressed following prior treatment with temozolomide and bevacizumab.

US stocks weren't much moved at the open in Wall Street, with just the Dow Jones nosing ahead.

It is up around seven points at the time of writing - at 21,416, while the S&P 500 is down by 0.63 at 2,434.

The tech heavy Nasdaq exchange is down almost eight points to stand at 6,226 after the index gained ground yesterday.

In Toronto, the TSX is ahead 40 points to 15,188.

On the S&P 500, the biggest riser is Oracle Corp (NYSE:ORCL) as the database giant posted better than expected fourth quarter numbers.

Oracle delivered a second consecutive quarter of revenue outperformance and EPS accelerated, said broker Wedbush.

Shares gained over 9.45% to $50.71.

Meanwhile, the big loser was Accenture (NYSE: ACN) which shed 5.40% to $120.25 as it reported a better-than-expected quarterly revenue but it clipped its annual revenue forecast.

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) shares were accelerating again - up 1.42% to $381.74. It came as there was more analysis of media- hungry firm and its fundamentals. It is too expensive?

US stocks are poised to go lower on Thursday as European shares lag but the oil price has had something of a bounce.

FTSE 100 is down over 26 at the time of writing - at 7,421, while the price of US cruder is up a tad at $42.77 a barrel.

It comes after a decline in US stockpiles last week has buoyed sentiment a bit but this is still very much a bear market. Oil traders were really spooked last week when new data showed US shale producers were churning out 9.35 million barrels last week, almost 8% higher than the same period last year.

On Wall Street yesterday, the Dow closed 57 lower at 21,410, while the Nasdaq finished 45.92 higher at 6,233 thanks to the continued rebound in tech stocks. The S&P 500 closed 1.42 lower at 2,435.

Futures trading today has the Dow Jones down 11; the S&P500 down 1.75 and the tech heavy Nasdaq down 4.5. It comes ahead of some US data due out this morning.

Initial jobless claims are for the latest week will be released at 8:30 am Eastern Time, while the FHFA house price index for April is schedule for release at 9:00am Eastern Time.

There are a host of company earnings ahead of the bell including cruise operator Carnival (LON: CCL, NYSE: CCL), which is expected to report quarterly earnings at $0.47 per share on revenue of $3.88 billion.

Accenture Plc (NYSE: ACN), the global consultancy firm, is also reporting today and expected to report quarterly earnings at $1.52 per share on revenue of $8.83bn.
