UK general election: When will we know the result and what impact will it have on markets?

The Conservatives are widely expected to increase their majority in the House of Commons in the general election

On Friday we find out whether Theresa May secured the big majority she was aiming towards when the general election result is announced.

A YouGov poll published on Wednesday night put the Tories on 42% and Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party on 35%. This would mean the Conservatives would end up with an increased majority in the House of Commons of almost 50 seats, compared to 17 previously.

We will know the official election results this evening after polling stations close at 10pm. Here is a run-down of how the events will play out and when the election results will begin to roll in:

10pm…Exit poll released as polling stations close

Voters will be provided with some indication on how the nation voted with an exit poll just after polling stations close. Previously the exit poll has proven to be spot on in predicting the results.

11pm…First official results announced

Labour seat Houghton and Sunderland South in the north east is expected to be the first to announce its results, having beaten everyone else to it in the past five elections. It declared its 2015 election result at 10.48pm.

3am…Winner should be known

Voters should have a pretty good idea on who is going to win at 3am when results start to flood in from across the country.

6am …Time to unwind

By 6am a clear winner should be known with many of the results declared.

8am…Markets open

London trading begins at 8am when markets will react in response to election results overnight.

Many economists think a Tory majority would be good news for markets, with the pound likely to make modest gains.

Should a hung parliament or Labour majority seem likely at this point, sterling is expected to head south. A hung parliament would spell particularly bad news for the currency as it would delay Brexit talks and spark political uncertainty.

12pm…Final constituencies announced

The last of the constituencies are expected to announce their votes just before noon. These are likely to be Blyth Valley, St Ives, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Wansbeck.
