US stocks close lower ahead of Comey speech; UK vote

Former FBI chief Comey is due to testify in front of the Senate intelligence committee on Thursday.

US crude rises

US stocks closed lower as investors fretted about a number of geopolitical issues, including a UK general election on Thursday.

FTSE 100 closed earlier practically flat on the day but on Wall Street, the Dow lost 47 at 21, 136.

The broader based S&P 500 shed 6.77 at 2,429, while the tech heavy Nasdaq lost 20 at 6,275.

In Toronto, the TSX bucked the trend to close 54 ahead - at 15,464.

US crude made up some ground too - standing at US$47.97 at the time of writing - up 1.20%.

On the company front, among the loser were D Supply Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:HDS) down 17.54% as the firm's quarterly earnings disappointed and it agreed to sell its waterworks unit for $2.5bn.

Conn's Inc (NYSE:CONN) dropped 9.14% to $17.15 as the retailer reported a narrower-than-expected loss for the first quarter, but sales missed.

IAMGOLD Corp (NYSE: IAG) added over 12% to $5.06 as Japan's Sumitomo Metal Mining Co agreed to buy a 27.75% stake in its Cote Gold project US$195 million.

IAMGOLD owns 92.5% of the gold development project in Ontario.

Wall Street shares started softer as predicted, as geopolitical tensions weigh.

The Dow Jones is down 37 at the time of writing, at 21, 146, while the S&P500 shed 3.5 to 2,432.

The Nasdaq lost 0.31 at 6,294. In London, FTSE 100 is down around 17 points at 7,509.

The US dollar is also losing ground against the Euro, which is 0.11% up against the greenback.

In the oil market , crude continues the slide as the OPEC output cut extension seems to have not had the desired affect - for now, at any rate.

In Toronto, the largest index, the S&P/TSX is down over 18 points to stand at 15,391.

Among the big losers on S&P 500 is Dollar General (NYSE:DG), down 2.29% to $76.52 a pop.

CNN has announced it will livestream Thursday's Comey testimony without requiring a cable subscriber log-in.

US shares are seen following Europe's cue to open lower on Tuesday as uncertainty in markets abounds.

This Thursday sees a general election in the UK in the aftermath of major terror attacks, and polls are showing a continuing narrowing of the Tory lead.

Meanwhile, the same day newswires will also be full of former FBI chief Comey's testimony in front of the Senate intelligence committee.

The topic - a probe into the links between between President Trump's election campaign last year and Russian officials.

Yesterday, Wall Street closed lower as risk-off sentiment came back on the table after Friday's highs.

The dollar also fell and US crude prices slipped - happening again today.

The benchmark Dow Jones lost 22 to 21,184; the S&P500 shed 2.97 at 2,436. The Nasdaq lost over ten points to 6,295.

Today, Dow futures are 35 lower; the Nasdaq futures are down five and the S&P500 is down almost five points. US crude is down 0.25% to $47.29 a barrel at the time of writing.

In London, FTSE 100 is down over eight points. French and German indices are also lower.

Stocks in focus today include Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) again, down a tad in pre-market, down 0.16% after it unveiled more of its upcoming products yesterday.

Lands' End (NYSE: LE) is set to release earnings before the open Tuesday, while Wall Street expects G-III Apparel Group Ltd (NYSE: GIII) to report a quarterly loss at $0.4 per share on revenue of $498.10 mln - again before the opening bell.
