Record highs for stock markets could prove a boon for trading at IG Group

Day ahead: Trading updates from IG Group, OPG Ventures; finals from Telford Homes

After a weak performance in its third-quarter, investors will be hoping that online trading giant IG Group PLC’s (LON:IGG) pre-close season trading update on Wednesday will show an improvement for the final three months of its fiscal year.

Back in March, IG revealed that its latest quarterly revenues fell by 3.8% during “a quiet period in global financial markets” and against an uncertain regulatory background.

But the FTSE 250-listed group also pointed out that its fourth quarter had started better, although it said that it “is impossible to predict the market conditions for the rest of the year or to draw precise conclusions at this stage.”

READ: IG sees revenues fall during "quiet" third-quarter

The group noted that active client numbers were up 13% in the third quarter, driven by success in online marketing, but revenue per client was down by 15%, with current clients trading less often in a quiet period.

Since that update, financial markets have been revitalised, with UK and US stock indexes hitting new all-time highs, and investors will be hoping this will translate into improved trading for IG.

Regulatory issues remain a drag for the spread betting firms, although earlier this month IG and rival CMC Markets Plc (LON:CMCX) welcomed the outcome of a consultation by German regulator BaFin into the retail contracts-for-difference industry in country, as both firms said they already comply with the upcoming changes.

Solar update sought from OPG

Trading news is also scheduled from AIM-listed OPG Ventures PLC (LON:OPG), a developer and operator of power plants in India.

So far, investors’ hopes that the company would have benefitted from the pick-up in the Indian economy have come to nothing, with the radical changes in the country’s currency, adverse weather patterns, and even the death of a Tamil Nadu minister all having a negative impact for OPG.

However, any update on the group’s proposed move into solar generation, along with its existing operations would be worth noting, according to Graham Spooner, investment research analyst at The Share Centre.

Telford has London focus

And among just a trio of firm’s scheduled to report full-year results, Telford Homes plc (LON:TEF) could be a feature, with the builder having already acquired two new sites so far in 2017.

Back at the end of April, Telford announced the latest addition to its development pipeline with a mixed residential and commercial site in Hackney, London E9, which Shore Capital said at the time was “core Telford Homes territory” with the units sitting “bang in the middle of the group’s target selling price range“.

Significant events expected on Wednesday 31 May:

Trading statements: IG Group Holdings PLC (LON:IGG), OPG Ventures PLC (LON:OPG)

Finals: LondonMetric Property (LON:LMP), Nature Group Plc (LON:NGR), Telford Homes PLC (LON:TEF)
