Ceres Power PLC (LON:CWR) has signed an agreement to develop its steel-based fuel cell technology for use in the housing market.
One of its existing customers has signed a two-year deal for develop residential power generation systems using the proprietary SteelCell technology.
Innovate UK, the government’s tech investment arm, is also backing the project with a grant of £700,000 as part of its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Most recently, Ceres has announced progress in industrial applications, electric vehicles and data centres, but it is also focused on the residential market and late last year trials of a prototype power system for the home began.
Phil Caldwell, Ceres‘chief executive, said: "I am delighted to be developing a next generation power system with the SteelCell technology at its core with one of our world-leading partners.
“We look forward to taking our latest system designs and recent real-world operating experience and combining it with our partner's product expertise".
SteelCell features a perforated sheet of steel with a special ceramic layer that converts fuel directly into electricity. It uses mains gas, which means it can be mass produced for domestic and business use.
