BT Group Plc (LON:BT.A) owned broadband provider Plusnet has been fined £880,000 by the British telecoms regulator.
Ofcom’s fine follows a ten month investigation which found that Plusnet overcharged former customers after they cancelled services, with some £500,000 taken in error in the company’s billing system.
Just over £200,000 has been paid back to 356 customers and more funds, due to customers that Plusnet could not contact, have been paid to charities.
"This fine should serve as a reminder to telecoms companies that they must adhere to Ofcom's billing rules at all times, or face the consequences,” said Lindsey Fussell, Ofcom's consumer group director.
