Don't call him Gideon; don't even call him George; call him Ed

Trending: St Patrick's Day and World Sleep Day [Shurely shome conflict here? - Ed.), George Osborne, Bob Diamond and IAG

According to Twitter, it is St Patrick's Day and World Sleep Day.

Those two things would seem to be incompatible.

Besides, it must be April Fool’s Day, because apparently George “don't call me Gideon” Osborne, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, has been named as the new editor of London free-sheet, the Evening Standard.

Congratulations to @George_Osborne who 20 years after applying to become a journalist has finally made it

Some might regard it as a bit of a come down.

George Osborne used to run the world's fifth largest economy. Now he'll edit London's free evening newspaper. https://t.co/jYWPqtD2oB pic.twitter.com/A9rr14gYPm

Others are concerned he will not be able to keep up two (or more jobs).

I find it very hard to believe Tory Party won't force @George_Osborne to make a choice between editing @EveningStandard & being an MP

We don't care, so long as he declares his earnings. Besides, if Boris Johnson can do the work of two men - Laurel and Hardy, presumably - then why not Georgie boy?

It's been an interesting day for comebacks/comedowns, with “Diamond” Bob Diamond, the former Barclays PLC (LON:BARC) boss, has returned to the City to take venerable private client broker Panmure Gordon & Co PLC (LON:PMR) er … private.

Shares in Panmure shot up as Diamond's private equity vehicle, Atlas Merchant Capital teamed up with QInvest, the Qatari investment bank, to take control of the firm, which can trace its history back to 1876.

QInvest already had a 43% stake in Panmure so the takeover should not have been a surprise, though Diamond's involvement might be,

Chief executive Patric Johnson seemed a bit irked by the media's interest in Diamond Bob's involvement.

"Do I expect Bob Diamond on the board? No, why would he be? This is not about Bob Diamond. This isn't his return to London, he's not going to run little Panmure Gordon," Johnson was quoted as saying.

Oh, well … at least it is not former Prime Minister David Cameron moving in to take over the company for which his old man once worked.

International Consolidated Airlines Group PLC (LON:IAG) is the unwieldy name given to the conglomerate that owns the British Airways and Iberia.

Most people call it IAG, for reasons that are obscure, but could be related to the fact that the more obvious acronym ICAG sounds like someone starting to conjugate the verb “to cadge”.

Be that as it may, it seems to have learnt its lesson with regards to snappy names with its newly launched airline, dubbed Level.

The new airline will take to the skies in June 2017 with flights from Barcelona to Los Angeles, San Francisco – well, Oakland - Buenos Aires and Punta Cana.

It is meant to be a low-cost long-haul operator, and I am sure it will do its level best to compete with the likes of RyanAir and American Airlines.
