Counter Strike: Global Offensive named as first title for Gfinity’s new Challenger Series

The Gfinity Challenger Series will be the first stage of the Elite Series

eSports group Gfinity Plc (LON:GFIN) has revealed that popular video game Counter Strike: Global Offensive will be the first title to form part of its new Challenger Series league.

The Challenger Series will be the first stage of the Elite Series and allow players from all levels to compete against one another and build their profile and ranking points.

The highest ranked players come the end of the season will then have the opportunity to be drafted into one of eight professional franchises and compete in the Gfinity Arena in the Elite Series.

Counter Strike is a multiplayer first-person shooter video game first released back in 2012.

Two more titles are expected to be added to the Challenger Series roster over the coming weeks.

“The launch of the Challenger Series is a major strategic milestone for the Company and goes some way to highlighting the growing demand for eSports competitions,” said chief executive Neville Upton.

“We're delighted that the popular multiplayer first person shooter game, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, published by Valve, is the first of three titles we expect to announce over the coming weeks as we continue to build out the Elite Series.”

The Challenger Series is expected to be launched on 27 March, while the final of the Elite Series is slated for some time in May this year.

The new level is a key move for Gfinity and expands its offering beyond the experienced, top-level gamers that regularly compete in the company’s eSports competitions and leagues.

Shares gained more than 3% this afternoon to trade at 15.5p.
