Wizz Air passenger numbers soar in February

Passenger numbers for February were up 22% to 1.72mln compared to same month a year earlier

Low-cost airline Wizz Air Holdings PLC (LON:WIZZ) saw passenger numbers fly higher last month after it established a new base at London-Luton airport.

Passenger numbers for February were up 22% to 1.72mln compared to same month a year earlier (Feb 2016: 1.41mln).

The important load factor metric – which calculates how full its planes are – was up to 91.9%, a year-on-year rise of 5.5 percentage points.

On a rolling 12-month basis, total passenger numbers at the budget airline were up 19% to 23.4mln.

It was a busy February for Wizz Air, during which the carrier added 12 new routes to its network, including three to and from Macedonia as well as two more to and from the UK.

It also set up a new base – its 28th around the world – at London-Luton airport, which will officially open in June.

Speaking at the time, chief executive József Váradi said the new base underlined “Wizz Air’s commitment to the UK”.

Shares were up 3p, or 0.2%, to £16.76.
