Windar lands first retrofit order for new wind turbine sensor

The LiDAR sensors help the turbine react to the direction of the wind,

Windar Photonics PLC (LON:WPHO) has picked up a repeat order for four of its wind sensors from a small French power generator.

The LiDAR sensors, which help the turbine react to the direction of the wind, will be installed on Vestas V112 3MW wind turbines during this quarter.

As well as energy production, the sensor boosts the life of the turbine by reducing excessive load cycles and maintenance costs.

Windar said the new sensors will include its wake detection algorithms, which can detect if the incoming wind flow is distorted by nearby turbines in a wind park, an effect that that can take a heavy toll on a turbine's critical parts.

Jørgen Korsgaard Jensen, interim chief executive, said the order was its first for its 4-beam WindVision system in the retro-fit market segment.

“Lately, we have seen an increasing interest in our unique wake detection capabilities from both IPPs [power generators] and OEMs.

“This will be our fourth commercial partner to join the program and over the coming months we expect to expand the program to between eight to ten commercial partners."

Cantor Fitzgerald added the customer has a total installed wind capacity of 77Mw in total, which represent a further opportunity for Windar.

Additionally these installations will be part of the previously announced R&D project with the Danish Technical University and will help to develop new turbine control strategies to negate the load created by turbine wake.
