How will markets welcome the inauguration of President Donald Trump?

The inauguration of president elect Donald Trump will be the key talking point for Friday.

It is perhaps a bit too easy to be too dramatic about the Donald Trump’s imminent presidency, starting with Friday’s inauguration.

For the 46% of American votes that ticked the box to ‘make America great again’ it will be a day of celebration and triumph, elsewhere the opposition will likely be vocal – not least across social media.

But, what about the markets and the international community?

What can investors expect of America’s 45th President?

Well, for good or bad, it is anticipated that Trump’s presidency will see things happen.

“The world is entering a period of heightened opportunities and risks,” said Holger Schmieding, analyst at Berenberg.

“On balance, we expect the switch from political gridlock between the US Congress and the White House to results-oriented co-operation between a Republican majority in Congress and a Republican US President to yield serious pro-growth reforms that will outweigh the damage which Donald Trump’s protectionist inclinations, his ‘rule by Twitter’ and his other unconventional traits may do.”

Schmieding added: “If he works with Congress, Trump can get things done.

“If he plays his cards well, he can preside over an economic upswing that looked set to gain some momentum anyway and will receive a significant boost from a major corporate tax reform.”

Here in London, where many are more contemplative about Brexit, The Donald’s incoming may be a welcome distraction – indeed, some fanfare regarding US trade ties would probably help the public relations campaign in the run up to the Article 50 trigger.

The City diary for Friday is more or less bare with just a Close Brothers Group PLC (LON:CBG) scheduled.
