Recce’s compound shows promising results against superbugs

Recce (ASX:RCE) has received positive early results for its lead product candidate RECCE 327 as a potential treatment against drug resistant E. coli bacteria.

Recce 327 is a synthetic compound currently being developed to fights against viruses and bacteria, including superbugs, even after repeated use.

The study conducted in the U.S. observed three groups of eight mice infected with drug resistant E. coli.

The infected mice were treated with Tigecycline plus RECCE 327. Tigecycline is a last line antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.

The results indicate that intravenous injection of RECCE 327 antibiotic reduces illness in mice infected by carbapenem resistant E. coli bacteria.

The carbapenem resistant E. coli is a family of bacteria that are difficult to treat because they have very high resistance to antibiotics.

This infection usually happens to patients in hospitals and has been categorised the highest threat level of ‘urgent’ by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The new pre-clinical data will potentially strengthen Recce’s investigational new drug (IND) submission for RECCE 327 to be trialled in humans as a new class of antibiotic for a range of drug resistant infections.

Recce’s share price has increased by about 27% since the start of this year, last trading at $0.21.
