Ergomed welcomes expansion of Sickle Cell Disease study

Modus Therapeutics, Ergomed's co-development partner on sevuparin, a treatment for Sickle Cell Disease, has been given the all-clear to also enrol teenagers into its clinical study.

Ergomed Plc (LON:ERGO) has been cheered by news of progress in a medical study by one of its co-development partners, Modus Therapeutics.

The pharma services and drug development group drew its shareholders’ attention to an announcement by Modus relating to sevuparin, a new drug to treat people suffering from Sickle Cell Disease.

Modus revealed it had been given the all-clear to enrol adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 into its Phase II Sickle Cell Disease clinical study, which is currently taking place.

Modus has decided to expand the study sample size to 150 patients in total with top line results now expected in the first half of 2018 rather than in the first half of next year.

"The decision to expand our joint Phase II clinical study with Modus Therapeutics will strengthen the study and resulting data,” said Dr Miroslav Reljanovic, chief executive officer of Ergomed.

“Broadening the inclusion criteria from adults to include adolescents with Sickle Cell Disease will allow us to fully explore the clinical potential of sevuparin to support a pivotal Phase III study in this indication. We look forward to reporting the data in the first half of 2018," he added.

Ergomed has been described as a pharmaceutical hybrid, because it is a pharma services firm that also takes a stake in drugs during the development process.
